Hirschsprung’s Disease
Hirschsprung’s disease is an intestinal disorder characterized by the absence of nerves in parts of the intestine. This condition occurs when the nerves in the intestine (enteric nerves) do not form properly during development before birth. This condition is usually identified in the first two months of life, although less severe cases may be diagnosed later in childhood.
Hirschsprung’s disease occurs in approximately 1 in 5,000 newborns.
Symptoms in newborns may include:
- Diarrhea
- Constipation or gas, which might make a newborn fussy
- Swollen belly
- Vomiting, including a green or brown substance
- Delayed passage of meconium – a newborn’s first bowel movement
